Privacy Policy

Last updated: June 24, 2026

This Privacy Policy explains how the Quartz team (“Quartz,” “we,” “us,” or “our”) handles information when you use the Quartz iOS app (the “App”). We built Quartz to help you reduce mindless scrolling, and we designed it to collect as little personal data as possible.

By using Quartz, you agree to the practices described in this policy.

The Short Version

  • Your Screen Time data — the apps you choose to limit and how long you use them — never leaves your device. We cannot see it.
  • We use Sign in with Apple for login. We never see your password.
  • To power the leaderboard, your chosen display name and avatar are stored publicly in Apple’s iCloud and are visible to other Quartz users.
  • We use no third-party analytics, advertising, or tracking SDKs, and we never sell your data.
  • You can delete your account and all associated data from inside the App at any time.

Information We Collect

Account information (via Sign in with Apple). When you sign in, Apple provides us with a unique account identifier and, if you choose to share them, your name and email address. The identifier is stored securely in your device’s Keychain and is used to associate your data with your account. Your name and email (if shared) are stored only on your device and are not uploaded to our leaderboard.

Leaderboard information (publicly visible). To take part in the global and monthly leaderboards, the following information is stored in Apple’s iCloud public database and is readable by other Quartz users:

  • Your chosen display name / nickname
  • Your avatar image (if you set one)
  • Your Quartz balance and streak count
  • The date your entry was last updated

Please do not use a display name or avatar that reveals information you want to keep private.

Profile and progress backup (private). So your progress follows you across your devices, we store a private copy of your data in your own iCloud account. This includes your display name, Quartz balance, streak count, onboarding status, and your focus-session and quota-exchange history. This data is stored in the private iCloud database tied to your Apple ID and is not visible to other users.

On-device Screen Time data. Quartz uses Apple’s Family Controls, Device Activity, and Managed Settings frameworks to let you select apps, categories, and websites to limit, and to apply shields when your daily quota runs out. These selections and your usage statistics are represented by Apple’s privacy-preserving tokens and are stored only on your device (in local app storage and a shared app group). This information is never transmitted to us or to any server.

Other on-device data. Settings such as your language preference, notification preferences, daily quota, and your avatar image file are stored locally on your device.

How We Use Your Information

We use the information above to:

  • Authenticate you and keep you signed in
  • Provide core features: quota tracking, app shielding, focus sessions, the Attention Gym games, streaks, and the virtual Quartz economy
  • Display and rank entries on the leaderboard
  • Back up and restore your profile across your devices
  • Send you local notifications (for example, when your quota is depleted) — these are generated on your device

Where Your Data Is Stored

Account, leaderboard, and profile-backup data are stored in Apple iCloud / CloudKit. Apple acts as our data processor for this storage, subject to Apple’s Privacy Policy. All Screen Time and usage data stays on your device.

The App makes one outbound network request to apple.com to read the current time from the server’s response header (used to keep streaks and quotas tamper-resistant). This request sends no personal information.

What We Do Not Do

  • We do not use third-party analytics, advertising, attribution, or crash-reporting SDKs.
  • We do not track you across other apps or websites.
  • We do not sell, rent, or share your personal information with advertisers or data brokers.
  • We do not collect your location, contacts, health data, microphone, or camera.
  • We do not offer real-money in-app purchases. “Quartz” is a virtual in-app currency with no monetary value.

Sharing and Disclosure

We do not share your personal information with third parties, except:

  • Publicly, by design: leaderboard information (display name, avatar, Quartz balance, streak) is visible to other users, as described above.
  • Apple: as our cloud storage and authentication provider.
  • Legal requirements: if required to comply with applicable law or valid legal process.

Data Retention and Deletion

Your data is retained while your account is active. You can delete your account at any time from within the App. Deleting your account removes both your public leaderboard entry and your private profile backup from iCloud. Data stored only on your device is removed when you delete the App.

To request deletion or ask a question about your data, contact us at babono@me.com.

Security

Your Apple account identifier is stored in the device Keychain. Data stored in iCloud is protected by Apple’s security infrastructure. No method of storage or transmission is 100% secure, but we take reasonable measures to protect your information.

Children’s Privacy

Quartz is a self-managed digital-wellbeing tool intended for users aged 13 and older. It is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child has provided us with personal information, please contact us so we can remove it.

International Users

Quartz is operated from Indonesia, and data is stored on Apple’s global infrastructure. By using the App, you understand that your information may be processed in countries other than your own.

Changes to This Policy

If we update our privacy practices, we will revise this page and update the “Last updated” date above. Significant changes may be communicated in the App.
